F'd in the A

Mon Sep 14, 2009, 12:31 PM
Well, as the title of my journal would state, I have been royally screwed over and feel that it is necessary to share this information with the DA community to hopefully avoid anyone else having to screwed over like I did.

It has been almost a year now since I have completed the full issue of Grimm Fairy Tales #33 for Zenescope Entertainment and I haven't received a dime for any of the work I did. Back in late winter, I was really hurting for jobs and trying to just stay afloat with my rent bills and car payments. I figured it was about time to escalate my hassling of Zenescope and let them know how much I needed the money I was owed. It seemed that they were sympathetic to my cause but because they had spread themselves to thin, they would not be able to pay the full amount. They were going to pay in installments. Well at this point I was pretty pissed off. I didn't take out a loan! After I mellowed out, I realized that any amount of money I could get from them would help out, but that wasn't going to happen either.

So my agent went to work, emailing and calling Zenescope trying to get, not only my money, but many other artists he represented as well. Zenescope felt he was too aggressive and proposed that an attorney become involved in the whole ordeal and make it a legal matter. This is where I am stuck at now.

Having talked to other artists I know and a couple others I have met at cons, this occurrence with Zenescope not paying people isn't just happening to us, it is kind of across the board. This is my warning to anyone who is thinking of getting involved with Zenescope in the future. Unless you are an EBAS or J. Scott Campbell, you may have problems getting the money that you deserve for the work you did. So spread the word if you know anyone or you yourself are going to be working for them.

I'm so sorry dear =( What sucks is this seems to be a common occurrence for the entire industry.

I think an attorney may be a good idea. The only thing is how much it'll cost. Zenescope definitely deserves to be reamed for this.

I agree with Alayna, an attorney might be the only way to get your money. Unfortunately, you'll prob have to front the cost for the lawyer and wait for a settlement to repay that. Good luck in your endeavors.

Might be a silly question, but did you sign a work for hire? If many of you did, then it should be pretty much open and shut.

I'll link this in my journal though, WFH or not, they still contracted you to do work, and it's shit like this that gives the industry a bad name.

I would suggest to find all the others who are owed money and get together with them.
There seem to be A LOT of people who havent been paid and it´s a huge amount of money so I dont think Zenescope is acting very smart by taking it to court.
They are just trying to scare you.

That is beyond uncool, I feel for you Jordan. It's happened to me a couple times so far, nothing too big so that's good, but it's not cool especially because we get so excited to be a part of something.

I will continue my boycott of Zenescope books. Which I apparently started since birth. (I'd buy yours though) ;)

Good luck with it all.
